A crochet animal appliqué is a small flat animal face you crochet separately and sew onto something, like a tote, a hat, or a baby cardigan. These free crochet animal appliqué patterns all start from the same round head. Swap the ears and you’ve got a bear, a bunny, or a mouse in about 20 minutes.

My niece wanted a bunny on her lunch bag. Simple, right? My first one looked like a potato wearing oven mitts. The ears were huge, and I’d stitched them on so low it looked half asleep. I laughed, ripped it out, and rethought the whole thing.

So now I use one basic head and only change the ears. It’s faster, and way harder to mess up.

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: worsted weight scraps. Cotton keeps its shape better, acrylic feels softer.
  • Hook: 3.5 mm. I go a size smaller than the label says, because tight stitches look neater on small shapes.
  • Yarn needle, scissors, and a few pins
  • Dark yarn for the face

Abbreviations: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, inc = 2 sc in the same stitch

Step 1: Make the Base Head

The finished head is about 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) across.

  1. Make a magic ring. Ch 1, work 6 sc into it, pull tight, and join with a sl st. (6)
  2. Ch 1, inc in every stitch. Join. (12)
  3. Ch 1, sc in the next stitch, inc in the next. Repeat 6 times. Join. (18)
  4. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.

Step 2: Pick Your Ears (Make 2)

  • Bear: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc, pull tight, join, and fasten off with a long tail.
  • Mouse: Make the bear ear, then add one round of ch 1 and inc in every stitch. Join. (12)
  • Bunny: Ch 7. Sl st in the 2nd chain from the hook, sc in the next, hdc in the next, then dc in each of the last 3 chains. Fasten off with a long tail. The narrow end is the tip.

Pin them on first. Ear placement changes the whole mood, so step back and look.

Step 3: Give It a Face

Stitch two tiny straight stitches for eyes, about 3 stitches apart. Add a small triangle nose just below. Want a muzzle? Work 6 sc in a magic ring in a light color and sew it on before the nose.

Tips From My Own Trial and Error

  • Do the face last. Sew the head down first, then stitch the eyes so they sit straight on the finished piece.
  • Keep ears around half the width of the head. They always look bigger once they’re attached.
  • Block it. Pin flat, mist with water, let it dry. It takes two minutes, and the shape improves a lot.
  • Whip stitch around the edge for hats and sweaters. Sew through the center only for bags.

Mistakes I’d Skip If I Were You

  1. Giant ears. They swallow the face.
  2. A loose magic ring. Pull that tail firmly, or a hole shows.
  3. A big face. Tiny features look sweeter.
  4. Glue on clothes. It gives up in the wash. Sew it.
  5. Not counting. Check for 6, 12, and 18 stitches at each round.

FAQs

What’s the easiest crochet animal appliqué for a beginner?

The bear. It only needs a magic ring and single crochet.

Which yarn is best?

Worsted cotton for crisp shapes, acrylic for soft baby items. Match it to whatever you’re decorating.

Can I wash things with crochet animal appliqués on them?

Yes, if they’re sewn on well. Use a gentle cycle in a mesh bag and air dry.

Last Thing

If you’re after free crochet animal appliqué patterns that are quick and forgiving, start with the bear. Make one this week and sew it onto something plain. Then try the bunny. Mine finally looks like a bunny now.
