Choosing Thread Weight by Project
General sewing and garment construction: 50wt all-purpose thread is the standard — strong enough for most seams and hems without adding bulk. It’s what I keep loaded on the machine by default, in white and black, just so I’m never caught without it.
Quilting piecing: 50wt again, reliable for piecing while staying fine enough to keep seams flat. After the 30wt disaster, I switched every piecing project to 50wt and never looked back — the seams press open cleanly instead of fighting the iron.
